Review by James Klein

Vinegar Syndrome’s Peekarama series continues with another double feature directed by veteran adult director Carlos Tobalina.

Come Under My Spell (1981)

Before Porky’s, Screwballs, or Revenge of the Nerds was released, Tobalina’s Come Under My Spell is very much in the same genre as the early-mid 80’s sex comedy…only with actual sex.

The hero of the story is Fernando (Fernando Fortes), a foreign exchange student who can’t seem to get laid. Fernando tries his best but just can’t seem to get the girl and resorts to using a fake pussy to get his rocks off. His best friend Dave (Blair Harris) tries to help Fernando by giving him a book on hypnotism. Fernando studies the book closely (he even reads the book while masturbating) and soon decides to try his new found talents on a pizza girl (Connie Peterson). Fernando and Dave tag team this bimbo, banging the shit outta of her and leaving their DNA all over this ditz before they awake her from her trance.

Come Under my SpellKnowing that hypnotism works, Fernando goes can’t resist temptation and starts hypnotizing every woman he runs into. Fernando has no shame, even getting a job as a wedding photographer who eventually hypnotizes the bride into giving his penis a nice suckjob, and soon eventually taking it all out on the bridal party.

blowjobWhen Fernando’s sexual adventures starts to drain him out, he is hospitalized due to his constant fucking and eventually dies after screwing a nurse. The finale of the film is a hilarious spoof on Carrie, thus making Come Under My Spell a rather pleasant surprise with an ending that left me laughing hysterically.

Vinegar Syndrome's Come Under My SpellWhat makes this film so enjoyable is the humor, the fact that the film just wants to be a silly comedy and still be an adult film. If only more adult films would go this route. There are some hilarious bits of dialog thanks to Fernando’s broken English (“No more sucking, time for fucking now.”) that is now quotable. Oh and if any film wants to make me laugh, fast motion fucking (think The Benny Hill Show) always does the trick. Rounding out the insanity of Come Under My Spell are some unintentional humor such as Fernando leaving the apartment and as the camera pans over we see a crew member sitting on the left corner of the frame looking bored. Even funnier is that some of the sex scenes are performed by a stunt cock that is definitely not Fernando.

PeekaramaCome Under My Spell may be stupid and immature but let’s face it, it’s a fuck flick for crying out loud!

Lady Dynamite (1983)

Everything I liked about Come Under My Spell is NOT reflected in Lady Dynamite. Aside from using the same director and also the same co-star (Blair Harris appears in a much smaller role) this adult feature is just tireless sex that is downright forgettable and dull.

Lady DynamiteColleen Brennan stars as a married woman whose husband gives her the clap. Furious and embarrassed, she decides to show him and adventures out to fuck other men (gee, that will show him. Never mind the poor guys you infected with your clappy cooter!). The rest of the film is just fucking until she confronts her husband during the unexciting “climax”.

Vinegar's Lady DynamiteColleen Brennan may be a decent actress with a very nice body but her voice got on my nerves within minutes. Anytime she spoke it reminded me of listening to Fran Drescher having an orgasm. The less said about this turkey the better. Just know that it doesn’t have an ounce of the humor or fast-paced insanity as Come Under My Spell.

Peekarama's Lady DynamiteThe DVD looks pretty decent but the source prints are getting a bit worn out over the years. There are moments of several shots in both films being out of focus and with obvious print damage popping up from time to time. It’s hard to blame Vinegar Syndrome for this as it’s definitely not a transfer issue. In fact, these two films probably never looked this colorful or clear. I did find Lady Dynamite difficult to hear but that didn’t bother me much since Lady Dynamite sucks. Both films contain the theatrical trailer as an added bonus.

Come Under My Spell Rating: ★★★½☆

Lady Dynamite Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

DVD Rating: ★★★☆☆
